Life after Katrina

Despite the news you may have seen or heard, life does go on in New Orleans.  While it is true that up to 80% of the City remains devastated, these are areas not frequented by tourists.

Bijou was very lucky, suffering only a little roof damage and some minor water damage due to the roof leak.  The real damage came later…we all have a “Katrina Story”, and I’ll tell you mine if you ask me!

As you wander through the Faubourg Marigny, stroll through the French Quarter and  go onward to the Garden District and the University Section of New Orleans, you will notice very little that seems out of place.

The economy has made great strides, so you will be able to pull up a chair at any number of your favorite restaurants, bars and music clubs.  The streetcar is operating on the Riverfront/Canal Street route for now, and buses are running dependably on the St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street lines.

It is important for you to know that the parts of the City that you will visit are clean and safe, despite reports to the contrary.  Who would you rather believe – local residents or some news reader who hasn’t set foot in New Orleans since one overly-festive Mardi Gras a long time ago?

Many of you have asked how to help this town that you have come to know and love.  It’s simple:  come visit us!  In doing so, you will help people who desperately need to work so that they can get their lives back together.
